changing x to l visa

Hello is it possible to change my visa from X to L , im currently enrolled at shanghai maritime university so it expires 30 jan im suppose to transfer to beijing foreign studies university they sent me my jw202 and all documentation but they told me i can only register there on the 23rd of feb when the school opens im worried on what to do from the 30th of jan to 23rd of feb please help me with your suggestions people , Im afraid to overstay i wouldnt want to think about the kind of punishments i hear about .

You can extend your X to an L at Shanghai PSB and provide explaination that you need to travel about one month in China. Don't worry, it is not difficult for you but better provide a travel itinerary and financial support for extension.
