I was wanting to know the process of getting a multiple entry visa for a year.

Hi, it will be for visiting friends and sight seeing.

If so, you can ask your friend in China to provide you an invitation letter that should contain your full name, gender, date of birth, purpose of visit, date of arriving and leaving China, place of visit, relations between the applicant and the inviter, financial support during stay in China and your friend's name, contact number, address and signature.

A proof of your frequent entry to the country may be also required.

This will not work for me as i do not know when i will be entering yet or how many times as it could be last minute flights dependant on cheap deals i can get.

I also have another friend that owns a business out there, what is the procedure for a Business Visa for a year multiple entry? As this might have to be the option?

If so, you may have to apply for a single entry one each time. For your friend who has business in China, I think it's possible for him to get a multiple entry one.
