How long can I stay in China with a tourist visa?

I am wanting to study Kung Fu in China and the academy cannot provide a JW202 form for a student visa. I have a British passport and would like to know how long I can stay in China on a tourist L. Thank you

Generally the L allows 30 days as duration issued on a single entry. You can get it extended at most twice with 30 days each. So, totally 90 days.

Thank you. I was also wondering about flights and accommodation as I understand these are prerequisites for the tourist L.
1. Should I book my flights for the ideal 90 days or book for 30 days and then change if the extension is approved?
2. I will be staying at the temple for the duration of my stay and I have an invitation letter confirming this. Will this suffice as proof of a "hotel" booking?
Thank you for your help.

1. You should book for 30 days in case the extension won't be approved.
2. Yeah, it can be used to substitute the hotel reservation.
