i need to know if my old passport will be taken when i get a new one

hello my passport is expiring soon too but my student visa is still valid, when i aply for a new passport do i have to submit the old one with the valid visa? a friend of mine submitted the old one then faced problems with banks and all other official things due to a differrent passport number from the one she used to apply.

As I know, there is passport number change on this renewal, and generally they will return the old one to you.
