how far is shanghai from hong kong. do I need another visa to go to hong kong and back to china.

The line distance is 1296km between them. Yes, you need a Hong Kong Visa to go to Hong Kong. When back to China, you need another Chinese Visa. You can try to apply a multiple entry-exit visa.
