About:China Train

I want to catch a fast train from Shanghai to Harbin in January and also return Harbin to Shanghai.

Can this be done in a day? Will I need to transfer between stations?
Can I buy tickets on the day or will I need to book in advance?

K56 from shanghai to Harbin will cost more than 31 hours,but if you take a G to Beijing first,then take a D to Harbin,it will cost 13 hours.
