Hello, I want to visit teh rice terraces of Yuanyang mid of April 2013.Is there usually already water on the fields?How long is the bus trip from Kunming and how many buses run per day?Which cities / vilages / places offer to best view on the terraces?Best Regards, Manfred

Yes, there is usually already water on the field.  There is direct bys from Kunming to Yuanyang, but there are only 3 from 10:40 to 20:00.  It takes about 6 hours. I suggest you take bus from Kunming to Jianshui or Gejiu. Then transfer to bus to Yuan yang. As for place of the best view of the terraces, you can choose the old town, Xinjie Town.

I read about that it is the best time to visit Yuanyang between December to end of March because that time of the year they start the irrigation on the rice fields. You are writing here that there is already water on the rice fields in April.......... I don't quite understand it. Did you mean that there is still some water left on the rice fields in April?
