Phone use in China

Hi, I would like to buy a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from overseas to give to a friend in China. Will he be able to use a China sim card and use with the network there? Or do I need to buy the phone in China instead?

I know about that if it supports GSM network, it can be used with a China sim card.
