visit guangzhou during 12 hours transit

hello
i am flying from london to melbourne and have a 12 hour transit time in guangzhou.
is it possible to leave the airport without a visa?
i have an australian passport.

If you want to visit the city, you can apply for a 24-hour Stay Permit at the airport. Visa is not required.
