About:Policy for Foreigners with Immediate Family Living in China

Applying for a residence permit based on being married to a Chinese national.

We were married in the UK 10 years ago and have marriage certificate isssued there. I have been in China for many years and working with a Z visa. I am now reaching retirement age and wish to obtain a residence permit. It is mentioned in the " What documents should be submitted when applying for this Family Visit Visa/ Residence Permit?" section above that the marriage certificate should be 'certified'. My questions are, certified by whom and should the translation be made by a solicitor? Many thanks, Mac.

You should have your marriage certificate notarized by your local Notary Public in UK, and then certified by the local Chinese embassy or consulate-general.

Hello Ruby,
Many thanks for your reply. As you will note from my first posting, we were married 10 years ago in UK. We returned to P.R.C. at that time and I have resided and worked here since then. Are you saying that we must return to the UK to have our marriage certificate notarized and certified by the Chinese consulate? Is there not some way of doing that here, such as being notarized by the British consulate in Shanghai?
Regards,
Mac.

Since your marriage certificate was issued by the UK government, so I think you should certify it by a Chinese government office. I advise you go to the local foreign affairs office in your living place to get some practical help.
