why were the clay soldiers crafted in the first place in terra cotta army?

Actually, in the three pits, the clay soldiers are all crafted. You can take a bird-view in the first pit 'cause nearly all the figures were unearthed. Due to the technology, other two pits are not completely unearthed yet.1

Because the emperor was afraid of death and what was beyond in the after life so hebuilt an army to go with him after he died
