Getting my husband on my z visa?

I will be going to china for a internship which i will get a F VISA first,then once everything is good transferring it over to a Z visa, my question is my Husband will be coming to live with me once i get my Z, does he have to be here before I get it and apply with me?or can he get it afterwards?
