Is it possible to travel directly from Nanning to Yangshuo, by bus or train?

Yes, it is possible. You can go to Nanning Langdong Bus Station to take direct bus to get there. The bus departs at 08:20, 11:00, 15:15 and 16:20.

The direct bus takes around 5 hours and costs about 142RMB per person.
The bus will stop once on the road.

Well, there is no direct train between these two palces.
But you can take direct long-distance buses at Langdong Bus Station, and get to the destination. The schedules are 08:20, 11:00, 15:15 and 16:20.

Yes, you don't have to via Guilin. They are direct buses from Nanning to Yangshuo.
