I'd like to know how long the trip would take, how long you need for the temple and the walk, and if it is possible to do a return trip in a day.If not, what are the accommodation possibilities nearby?

The Toursim Bus 707 will take you from the city to Lingyan Temple, which will cost you about 2 hours starting from Jiefang Bridge. The bus will leave Lingyan Temple at 15:30 in the afternoon. You can definitely make a return trip a day.
