Getting a Chinese visa while in HK?

I am planning a visit to Hong Kong for 2-3 weeks. I hope to take a brief side trip to mainland China from there. Should I plan to get a visa to China beforehand (if possible) or can this be taken care of while in Hong Kong? Is one way easier than the other? I am a US citizen.

You'd better apply for a Chinese visa ahead of your trip to avoid any unexpected trouble during your trip.
