how to travel best?

We are 4 adults: 2 students and their parents. We plan to travel by night train from Shanghai to Xian. From there we will continue to Pingyao and then via Foguang Temple (Wutai Mountains) to Datong. From there we want to get to Beijing. Should we do everything by train or are there some recommended alternatives?

I think trains are good from Shanghai to Xian and then Datong to Beijing. From Datong to Beijing, you can also choose to take the long distance bus. But if you can book the soft sleeper on the train, I advise you to take the train all the way, which will be much comfortable.From Pingyao to Datong, you can also take the bus or the train. Both of them are not bad.
