Can I apply for tourist visa from overseas

I am an Australian citizen currently in United States under the ESTA Visa waiver program. I will be traveling to attend a conference next month on Oct 10th and wondered where can I apply for a Chinese tourist Visa without having to return back to Australia?

What are my options, please advise.

You can apply for a Chinese visa in US, check the consular district of embassy and consulates first according to your residency. But if for conference, you need to apply for a business visa with invitation letter from China, not a tourist visa. The onward ticket for leaving China is ok for visa application.
