6 months passport validity starting from?

I understand that you need a passport valid for 6 months - 6 months when applying for visa, entering China or leaving China? I am planing to visit China in August 2012, my passport is expiring in January 2013.
Can my husband with whom I am going apply for visa on my behalf? We are both living in Japan now.

The 6 months passport is needed when you submit your application for China visa. You can apply for a China visa on your husband's behalf if he will not go in person.
