You may take a taxi from downtown Dunhuang to Liuyuan Railway station, which is very convenient. The taxi fare is around CNY50 per person if you share the car with others, but if you want to charter a car, then the fare would be more than CNY100. The journey takes about two hours.

Thank you Jessica for the info. It is a great relief knowing there is someone knowledgeable about transportation.
Another question, is it the only railway station from Dunhuang to Turpan? Is there one that is nearer to downtown Dunhuang?

There are two railway stations in Dunhuang, one is Dunhuang railway station and the other is Liuyuan railway station. But you can only take train from Dunhuang to Turpan at Liuyuan railway station, which is a bit far from the downtown Dunhuang. Hope it is helpful.

Thanks for the info. At least I know that it is only in Liuyuan Railway that I can take the train. Is there a problem buying soft or hard berth tickets for 3 persons?

Well, it depends on your travel date. If you travel during China holidays, the tickets will be hard to get. Anyway, to guarantee the availability, you are suggested to purchase the tickets couple of days prior to the departure. Also, you may find a local agency to help you to reserve the tickets, which will be much easier and convenient.

Thanks Jessica. Can local agency in Shanghai reserve the Liuyuan-Turpan tickets for us? We plan to travel on Sept 27 which is days ahead of the China holiday.

Maybe, but I am not sure whether they can guarantee the tickets for you or not. Anyway, you can have a try.
