Transit in Canton

Hi my son is flying with china southern to Amsterdam & has an 18 hour transit at the airport. We have booked him a room at the Pullman hotel - opposite gate 13. Does he need a visa for this short transit in Canton?

If he will leave the airport, a transit visa is required. He should apply it in advance in Australia.
