Got my residence permit with Visa X, now what?

I just got my permit to stay as a student a couple of days ago. Do I have to re-register with the police even if I will only be here for one more month? Are there any penalties whenever I decide to leave the country, if I don't?
Originally I got the visa X thinking I was going to stay longer than 6 months but I'm not anymore.
