About:China Visa

Do we need a visa if we wish to leaev the airport?

We have a 12 hr stop over in Guangzhou, then continuing on to Europe. Do we need a visa if we wish to leaev the airport?
What shold we do / Where should we visit for 1 day?

You do have to apply for a China transit visa for this in advance, and you may also apply for a 24-hour stay permit at the airport on your arrival.

Since you just have 12 hours including the transitional time between the flights, I think you may just choose to vist one of the attractions in Guangzhou such as Yuexiu park, White Cloud Mountain, Chimelong Resort or Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family. If you are a shopping lover, Shangxiajiu Road and Beijing Road are good choices.

You don't need a visa for stays less than 24 hours if you don't leave the airport
