About:FAQ of Chinese Visa Application

At what age are children required to have a visa in their own passport?

I have been told that if a baby doesn't have their own passport that their parent can have a child's visa in their passport. So when does it then become necessary that the child have their visa in their own passport?

In the US, as well as other countries, children can apply their own child passport. It is not a must for visa application, because they can share the same passport with parents. When the children grow up to 16 (maybe 18 in some other countries), they need independent passport. When applying a visa, their individual passport is required.
