I didnt know that I have to register at th local police station after arrival, how important is it?

I`m travelling through china doing 2 months photograpy trip. Now staying at my old friend`s place in Beijing (HuaiRou District), been here for three days already and dont sure if I need to go to the local police station to register and what are the consequences if I dont?
