Letter of invitation from China for visa application

I'm a Canadian in HCMC applying for a visa for China. Do I need a letter of invitation either from
an employer, a Chinese contact or a travel agent verifying an itinerary? If I want to stay moe then thirty days - how do I renew it for another 30 days? Thank you your time and attention to these questions.

May I know what will you do in China for so long time? If you want to stay in China longer than the approved duration on your visa by the visa officers, you may just apply for an extension of stay about one week before your duration expires at the local Public Security Bureau when you are in China.
