Can a family visit visa be changed into working visa without leaving China?

I am Chinese citizen and have been married to my English hunband for over 18 years. If my husband get a family visit visa in China and find a job there, can his visa be changed into a working visa? We plan to move back to China but I am worried that he won't be able to stay and work.

1. Depending on how long your husband will stay in China, he can be granted by local Entry & Exit Department either a family visit visa that is valid for one year at most or a residence permit that is valid for one or two years.
2. If he find a job in China during his stay, he needs to go back to UK, or mail all the required documents back to UK to apply a Z visa. And then use the Z visa to apply a residence permit at the local public security authorities within 30 days.

Melissa, thank you for your reply.

We plan to move back to China for long term so we need my husband to be able to stay for long term and able to work. My concern is that if he has to come back to the UK to apply for his Z visa and if he doesn't get it, he may not be able to go back to China. If the documents can be posted back to the UK for application, that will be helpful.

Hi, Anna, I heard from a friend that if your husband work in Beijing, the visa change from L visa to Z visa can just be done in Beijing, while work in other cities, he should go back to UK. First, when he is in China, he should require his employer to give him an Invitation Letter by a Duly Authorized Unit, or a Confirmation Letter of Invitation, and Foreigner Employment Permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China. Then he should go back to UK to have a medical check which must be done in the applying country (UK), and with other required documents, he can apply a Z Visa. With all the documents ready, it would not be difficult to get a Z visa. Assuming the worst, he did not get the Z visa, he can still use his family vist visa to re-enter China. So do not worry! Good luck with you!
