Visa for 19yo Australian wanting to study 3 months and then work in China for 10 month

Hello there - my 19yo son wants to spend 'gap year' in China in 2013. He has researched language schools and will do intensive 3 month live in course Dec12 - Feb13. After this he would like to travel and seek work / casual work for remainder of 2013 if this is possible.
We understand he will be eligible for student visa for Dec-Feb portion. Can you please advise if there is a visa that he would be eligible for with the Mar-Dec portion that would allow him some employment if the opportunity arises. Thank you.

For intensive 3 months study, he can apply for a F visa. If he will find a job afterwards, he can apply for a work visa with help of his employer in HK if he do not want to return to Australia. But if not, an option for him is to extend his F visa through an agency within China. With this F visa, he can travel and find job in China. Then, apply for a work visa if job position is settled (this also can be done in HK).

Hello Alvin - thanks for your first response it helps a lot. Just to clarify - my son intends to study in Shanghai and then look to work in Shanghai or Beijing areas - not Hong Kong. You mention "with his employer in HK" in your response, but he does not intend to go to HK. Are you able to confirm - can he follow your suggestion and do visa update from anywhere in mainland ZhongGuo ? Or will he need to go to HK for some part to do visa update ? Thanks again.

Hi Scott, I mean to apply for a work visa in HK, because applicants can not apply for new visas within mainland China, even through a visa agency.
