pickup the visapost?

Question

Myself and my wife live in France but 4 hours from the nearest Consulate, can we apply in person and then have the  papers sent back to our home adress in France?

You need to check Consular Jurisdiction of Chinese embassy or consulate first. If the consulate you said is right place for your visa application, please let me know. I can tell you if they provide post/mail back service. BTW, if you can not pick up your visa in person, you may entrust someone else to do it with the receipt.
