We are US citizens with valid passports,  attending the OBHM conference for the first time in Beijing, with plans to tour your place during or after the event, do we still need  require formal VISA formal application? kindly advise  ,

You just need to apply for a China business visa to attend the OBHM conference, you need an invitation letter from the conference organizer for the application, you can use the business visa to travel in China after the end of the conference.
