Stopping in chinese airport 15 hours, is visa required?

We will be in transit at an airport in China for 15 hours and am wondering, if a transit or other visa is required if:-
a) we stay in the transit area, or
b) if we go outside and have a look around.
Thanks

A transit visa is not required if you stay in the transit area.
A transit visa is required if you go outside of the airport and have a look around. If you don't want to obtain a transit visa, you can try to apply for a 24 hours stay permit when you arrive in the airport by presenting your round-trip flight tickets and hotel booking.
