If he submitted all the necessary documents, it only takes 4 working days for the China Embassy in Philippines to issue a visa for him.
Yes, the round-way air tickets are necessary for the visa application.
Your BF as first time applicant should submit the documents below:
1. His original passport with blank pages and at least 6 months validity left before expiration.
2. A truly and completely filled application form affixed with one passport-size or 2x2
colored photo, with white background, full-face front view, and no hat.
3. Invitation letter from you enclosed with his travel purpose to China, accommodation in China and your address in China, and copy of your Chinese ID card.
4. Original NBI clearance valid for travel abroad.
5. His original bank certificate with receipt or original passbook; if you will sponsor him, provide your bank certificate.
6. photocopy of the emergency contact information page of his passport (must be filled).

The visa fee is 1400 pesos for a single entry one.

Filipino passport holders are exempt from visa to Hk for 14 days, adn to Macau for 30 days, so he can go to Hk and Macau during he is in China. However, if he will return to China again after the HK_Macau trip, he should apply for a double entry China tourist visa which costs 2100 pesos.

Hello, thank you Emma! So if my BF renew his passport first, how many days he can get the new passport after his interview? How about if he renew in Malaysia is it possible? But we are the seaman, maybe difficult for us. How about after his passport renew, where he should go for apply China Visa L? But like if he just apply on Mar 10th, (Passport expire on Sep05, that's also can not ?) Can do anything for extending the passport valid for a week or few days?

Sarah Cheng, he has to apply for Philippines passport renewal because a passport with at least 6 months remaining validity is required. if he just apply China visa on Mar 10th, passport expire on Sep05, the passport doesn't have 6 months remaining validity.

If he applies passport renewal in Malaysia (through Philippines embassy or consulates in Malaysia), it takes 4 weeks.
