If you go to the local issuing office, (not the consulate) the standard time is 4 working days, there is an express service for an extra fee, but I recollect it still takes 3 days. You can also apply by mail or through an agent..... these can take a couple of weeks. The options are a bit complex (as I discovered a couple of months ago. Search on the Net and you should find the detailed info OK...I did!

England is under the consular districts of China embassy in London, you need to apply China tourist visa through Chinese Visa Application Service Center in London (CVASC London). Address: Morley House, 26 Holborn Viaducts, London, EC1A 2AT. China embassy in London only accepts China visa application from diplomatic/official/service passport holders, you hold an ordinary passport, so you have to apply it through CVASC. It accepts visa application by post, please refer to http://www.visaforchina.org/LON_EN/applybypost/index.shtml to read the detailed information.
