Is visa needed for US citizen for international flight changing planes in Guangzhou on same airline

I will be flying from the US to Southeast Asia with a stopover of 2 or 3 hours in Guangzhou. Both flights are on the same airline. If a visa is not needed, what happens if the flight is delayed from the US and the connecting flight in Guangzhou is missed and you have to wait for the next flight which will make your connection more than 24 hours at the Guangzhou airport?

A visa is not required for a 2-3 hours stopover in Guangzhou airport. If the flight is delayed from the US and the connecting flight in Guangzhou is missed and you have to wait for the next flight which make your connection more than 24 hours at the Guangzhou airport, the staff of the airline should help passengers to solve the visa problem, you can ask them for help. It is a special case for the delay of your flight. The Guangzhou Baiyun Airport will let you to stay for more than 24 hours.
