Is a visa required for 14 hour stopover before flying to final destination?

I am flying to UK via Bejing and have a 12 hour stopover. The stopover happens at night until the next morning, can I stay in a hotel in the airport if I dnt have a visa, or do I have to stay in the departures/arrivals area of the airport?
