If you apply China visa in Paris, the total fee of single entry tourist visa for British passport holders is 65 Euros (30 Euros for single entry fee + 35 Euros for service fee)

I thank you very much for your answer - very helpful. However I'm pretty sure that I also asked you whether it was necessary to go to Paris twice if you don't know anyone living there who can collect the visa for you ie once to depose the application and a second time to collect the visa.
I would be extremely grateful if you could answer this question too.

I'm afraid that you need to go to Paris twice if you don't know someone there. The mail application is not available yet. But the Express Service is available, with which you can collect your visa in the next working day after 1530. The Express service fee is Euros 60.

By the way, as you mention that you live far from Paris, you should check if you are living in its consular district. People should go to the related consular district to apply for China visa. FYI: https://www.travelchinaguide.com/embassy/france/
