About:Yanmenguan

The best, cheapest way from datong to Yanmenguan Pass

If anyone could say if the pass is worth seeing if one has already been on 4 sections of the great wall. And if it is then, the most convenient transport from either downtown datong or from the hanging monastery.

No, not necessary to see Yanmenguan Pass. It is just a small pass left with a pavilion there between two hills. It is saild that the local government would rebuild some parts, not interesting to see brand new buildings too.

I have visited the pass a few days ago. It is a beautiful location, but remember a lot of the wooden tempels, towers and house have been rebuilt due to destruction during the japanese occupation. There are a few tourists. Most of them will not hike the trail and they are walking in the neigbourhood of the main tower.

I agree Cindy, since the rebuild of Yanmenguan the appeal has been lost. I regret not stopping off there there when I was sitting on a bus to Datong going past the area in 2005 ! Big regret.
