About:Tibet Travel Permit

Foreigner travel to Tibet with Chinese friends

Hi, I'm looking to travel to Tibet with some of my Chinese friends. I'm in China on business visa and want to know what my options are. As I will be with a group of Chinese friends, do I still need to join a tour party, or can they act as my 'tour guide'. We are looking to go over the National Day holiday's, will this also be an issue? Is there a possibility that Tibet been closed to foreigners at this time?

Thanks James,

You may not need to join in a tour party but you need to have the Tibet travel permit. Without that permit, you can not get the train ticket. Although your Chinese friends can buy train ticket for you, there are officers check your passport, permit in the train. I would suggest you can let your friends search for a Lhasa travel agency and entrust it to handle your travel permit. Then you can travel together with your friends. National Day holiday will not be an issue, just more visitors.
