I am a British traveler likely to be traveling alone overland to Beijing. Am I likely to experience any problems and how smooth is the visa process itself?

China government doesn't establish embassy in Almaty, you have to go to Astana to apply China visa, I can't sure you can get a China tourist visa through China embassy in Astana because you are a traveler in Kazakhstan. Anyhow, you can have a try! Good Luck!
