I am arriving on the 20th of September at Shanghai Hongqiao train station. Is it possible to buy train tickets in advance from that train station, on the routes Nanjing- Xian and Xian - Shanghai? From which counter do you buy those tichets? Thanks for your answer!

Yes, you may buy the train tickets in advance at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. Well, I do not remember so clearly about at which counter to buy those tickets, but there are signs leading you find it. Or you can ask someone for help at the train station.
