What is the maximum duration I can stay in China with a tourist Visa?

I would like to travel around China for 3 months (maybe longer). I think I read somewhere that at tourist Visa is only valid for 30 days, but I'm not sure. If so, is there any way to extend that while I am in China? Also, when flying to China do I need a "return ticket" or would a one-way ticket suffice? Basically I am trying to do an open ended trip to China/Southeast Asia.

YOu can get tourist visas for up to 6 months. They can be single entry, double entry, or multiple entry. However, there is a duration of stay requirement, so even if you get a 6 month visa, you will most likely have to leave China at least once during your valid visa period, because most Chinese embassies in the US only give you a 90 day period for each 'entry' into China. Then you have to do a quick visa run to another country! But if you will be in ShenZhen around your 90th day, then you can just take a quick day trip for shopping to Hong Kong(45 minute train ride from SHenZhen to HK) and then re-enter China! You do not even have to actually go to HK. You can just get off the train at the first stop, turn around, and get right back on going in the other direction and re-enter China!

The maximum stay duration of a tourist visa is 180 days stay duration. Normally the duration of stay of a "L" visa is 30 days, which means the holder of the visa may stay in China for up to 30 days from the date of entry. If your estimated stay in China is longer than 30 days, please make it clear in the application form and ask for the Visa Officer's approval when you submit your application..
