Nancy Moon does NOT know what she is talking about!!! I have been living in Beijing for more than 6 years, without a work permit or a job (I have money). First you should get a multiple entry tourist visa from a Chinese embassy in America. I believe that they are only in LA, New York, Chicago and Houston. The visa will have a length of validity, typically 6 months or a year and it will also state a maximum duration for each visit. Typically the maximum duration for each visit is only for 90 days at a time. So if you get a 6 month visa, you would have to leave mainland CHina at least once during your visa validity. Now, once you are in mainland China, you can just apply for a Business F visas through some company that has guanxi 'relationship' with some person in the government and then you can get a up to a 1 year visa each time (they are getting more difficult to get and 6 month F visas are now the norm). Americans have it the easiest! The only catch is that they are EXPENSIVE because normally, you are NOT legally supposed to get a Chinese visa within China...you are supposed to apply in a Chinese embassy in another country (typically your own country). So it will cost up to 3,000 RMB for a 6 month visa within China! Now the good thing about the visas that you get in China, is that, unlike the visas obtained from the embassy in America, there is NO duration of each stay requirement, so you can stay in China for the entire duration of your visa's validity! Also, the good thing about getting a visa here, is that they are almost always multiple entry. This is great because it means you can freely come and go and travel to other countries in Asia very easily and return to China as often as you like! Actually, the vast majority of foreigners I have met in China ALL do it this way. Most of them do not work here, some go to school, and some people like me, are just investors, hanging out & discovering the best ways to lose my money to all the swindlers here... ;-)

I just noticed that Nancy Moon apparently has acquired a lot of points (1100 or so) on this site because she has answered about 537 questions. But based and her woefully inaccurate and terrible information, I really wonder how much bad information she has given out to how many people!!! That is really scary!!!

Alsom John, I forgot to add that San Francisco also has a Chinese consulate office.

If you don't work in China or have an immediate relative living in China, it is very hard for you to move and live in Chian for 2-3 years. If you don't want to work in China, you just want to live in China, you have to have an immediate relative living in China, such as Chinese spouse or child.
