can i change china tourist visa (l visa) to business visa (f visa)?

I'm and American here in Beijing on an internship. If I have an L tourist visa (requiring me to leave the country every 30 days), can I apply to have it changed to an F visa WITHOUT having to leave the country?

You can apply for F visa at the Exit-Entry Administrative Bureau of Beijing Public Security Bureau without leaving China. The invitation letter from the internship company will be required. You'd better find the company to help you to change L visa to F visa.
