You don't need to apply China visa for yourself, but you need to apply China visa for your famlily, you can do it from Chinese embassy in Tokyo if you and your family live in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Nagano, Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Niigata, Fukushima, Miyagi or Yamagata

what are the documents required to apply for the visa for my family from japan?

As we had the visa category "official" for our stay in japan, so we were not issued with the Alien registeration card.
