Visit Great Wall from Datong

We read that the great wall near Datong was well worth visiting. Unfortunately that article didn't explain how to get there.
Can somebody help me with the following questions?

Should we take a taxi and how much would that cost?
Is it possible to walk on the wall (of along it)?
Any other tips?
