I was there in April. I went down on a bus from Xi'an to the north. It's about a 4-5 hour bus ride from there. But the bus will take you right to the foot of the mountain, which is where the ticket office is. There are hotels at the bottom of the mountain, and there are hotels about half way up to the golden summit. I would recommend staying at the half-way point. Not 4-star accommodations, but it puts you closer, so you can get an early morning start on the path. Right there near the hotels is Nanyan Temple. This is where the scene from the movie was shot when the woman was practicing her tai chi with the snake out on the ledge. The scene where they are practicing out on the docks on the pond is further down the mountain, before you even get to Purple Cloud Temple. They do martial arts shows there. As for the Golden Summit itself, I'm in pretty great shape, and the Golden Summit Temple complex took a good 3-4 hours to reach from Nanyan. It's a lot of stairs, but worth it when you get to the top. Hope this is helpful.
