How readily are VISA and Mastercard accepted at shops in Shanghai and Hong Kong?

They are accepted in department store, brand shops, large shopping malls and supermarkets. You should ask if they accept payment by card in other shops. It is much easier in Hong Kong. Most of the shops in Hong Kong will accept the cards, except for some booths.
