I live in Xian and my suggestion is: if you come by train, buy train ticket 3-5 days in advance. Better to book a hotel online before going. The city center of Xian is much smaller than Beijing. So, transportation is easy for taxi is cheaper. No subway, but most attractions are in the city proper. Any questions you have, just feel free to ask.
