my chinese friends studying here in the philippines will visit their home country (china)

Question

my chinese friends studying here in the philippines will visit their home country (china) by the end of this month. however, 2 of them have (chinese) passports which will expire in august 2011. can they travel using these passports, or do they need to renew them first here before they leave?(does the 6-month validity requirement apply only for visa application and not on the actual trip?)thanks.

they can go to China freely. no actual requirement for the validity of passport. 6 months passport is required for foreigners to apply for China visa.
