About:Policy for Foreigners with Immediate Family Living in China

Hi there,

I am a New Zealand citizen, to marry a Chinese citizen - we plan to register in NZ, and get the marriage certificate authenticated by Chinese Embassy in NZ. By doing so, does it mean the marriage also registered in China or do we have to go to a government agency in China? Also, I am planning to move there after the marriage, would it be possible to apply for a resident permit?

From the thread I see that it is very difficult to get resident permit, however, Family Visit Visa doesn't allow me to work - and I would like to be able to work. Would someone be able to suggest which is the best way to do this.

I tried to ring the Chinese Embassy, sadly, I always end up being greeted by an automated person.

Many thanks in advance.

If you want to live in China after the marriage, you'd better make marriage registration in China. If you want to register marriage in NZ, you have to get the marriage certificate authenticated by new Zealand Ministry of Interior and New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, then get it authenticated by China embassy in Wellington or consulate in Auckland.

Then the marriage license can be used in China, you don't need to register again in China.

It is hard to get a residence permit in China even after the marriage. You'd better find a job in China, then go to New Zealand to apply for work visa, then you can change it into residence permit within 30 days after arrival at the local Public Security Bureau.

Thank you both to Mike and Simon who have replied.

I am now just wondering of the first step I should do after getting the marriage certificate authenticated by the Chinese embassy.

Prior to moving to China, would I be issued with the usual Tourist visa, or is there other types of visa, it is quite vague from the website.

Simon, would you be able to give me some advice on the steps into settling down in China. My (future) husband, would like me to relocate to China asap after we got married, it would be good if I won't need to fly back to NZ and wait for another type of visa to come out.

Your advice is much appreciated, many thanks.
