About:China Civil Aviation - Regulations & Security Check

I am travelling to china for ding a Research project. I would like to carry soil samples for my research purpose. Could I keep this in my cabin luggage or must I put it into a checking luggage?

I think you have to put it into the check-luggage and make a declaration for this.
